Where Theatre Meets Computer Science  

When you talk to young people about data literacy., they do not see the excitement and drama But Data Education in Schools in Scotland is about to change all that.

Data literacy is important because as it gets easier for computers to collect large amounts of data, it is increasingly used to make decisions in our everyday lives. From fitness devices to smart meters to You Tube recommendations, our personal data is used by computers and technology companies all the time.

Data Education in Schools is developing an interdisciplinary data education curriculum for Scotland and a set of engaging real world data science teaching materials for primary and secondary school teachers.

In the three years since the programme started, the team havs reached over 20,000 learners through their innovative live lesson activities as well as hundreds of teachers globally with an interest in data.

How you started

The eight-year project, which began in 2019, is led by Professor Judy Robertson, Chair in Digital Learning at the University of Edinburgh. The wider team brings together academic colleagues, qualified teachers and STEM professionals with expertise from industry and local government. The Data Education in Schools project is part of the Edinburgh and South East Scotland City Region Deal Skills Programme, funded by the Scottish Government.
