Visiting The Victorians Online

Jan Green researches some online resources for teaching Victorian history to both primary and secondary students. Folder: InteraCTive Issue 61

This excellent research archive fully merits the many awards it has received. Students at Key Stages 3/4 and 16+ will find much of value in this huge repository of links and site-based materials on Victorian life. It has sharp, distinct graphics and simple colours, with a menu button back to the home page in each section.

The home page contains only buttons to access main headings: ‘The Victorians’, ‘Political History’, ‘Social History’, ‘Gender Matters’, ‘Philosophy’, ‘Religion’, ‘Science’, ‘Technology’, ‘Genre and Technique’, ‘Authors’, ‘Visual Arts’, ‘Theatre and Popular Entertainment’,
‘Victorian Web Books’, ‘Victorian Texts’, ‘Bibliography’, ‘Economic Contexts’, ‘Periodicals’, ‘Before Victoria’ and related web resources. Each section typically features a short essay, some images and internal links leading to subtopics. There are also bibliographies and related external links, plus timelines on British history and Victorian legislation.

There is a staggering amount of information here, but for comprehensiveness and ease of use it can hardly be bettered.
