This Ofsted report reveals that increasing workload during the pandemic is an ongoing challenge for schools and delivering education to pupils both remotely and in person poses a threat to teacher wellbeing.
In particular, mixed delivery situations were seen as posing a threat to staff wellbeing. It was reported a number of times that staff were required to deliver content to students both in and outside of the classroom simultaneously.
Understanding what successful remote education has been a priority for Ofsted during the pandemic. The report has found that without an appropriate blended learning model, the current crisis makes for a particularly challenging situation.
Remote education appears to be a poor replacement for normal classroom practice. However, even if not a full replacement for classroom teaching, it is a lot better than not having a remote education offer at all.
Three-fifths of teachers were quite confident that they were providing a high-quality education through their school’s remote education solution when this was needed. In addition, just over half were confident their solution was sustainable for the future. On this basis, it is likely that a large proportion of schools in England providing a remote solution are doing well at mitigating the amount of learning loss that children experience.
