TeachingTimes spoke with Mike Mongo about engaging children in space learning and where UK schools stand to improve.
TeachingTimes: To begin with, could you please introduce yourself and your career to date?
Mike Mongo: Hi, I’m Mike Mongo! Since 2007, I have been an astronaut teacher, travelling the world to inspire students about space exploration. In 2022, I achieved my childhood dream when I was selected by Uplift Aerospace to be an astronaut on their first-ever Web3 commercial crew, Space+5. I am currently training at Cape Canaveral, Florida. I am also the author of the best-selling book, 'The Astronaut Instruction Manual', which emphasises the importance of education in preparing the next generation for life beyond Earth. I am passionate about encouraging students (and teachers) to dream big, whether that means becoming an astronaut, an artist, or an entrepreneur.
Why, in your opinion, is now the time for a resurgence of space learning in the UK education system?
Now is the time for a resurgence of space learning in the UK education system because the UK has quietly become a major figure in the global space industry. Did you know that the UK produces more small satellites than anywhere else in the world besides California?
