What do you need to make a film? According to Leeds Young Film, the essentials are a tripod, a selfie stick, story prompts, a storyboard notebook and pencil or pen … plus of course a phone or tablet.
If you want some inspiration dip into their mini guide to filmmaking which includes three modules: Introduction to Filmmaking; One Shot Movie And Visual Storytelling. These have been produced as part of the Burberry Inspire project.
Burberry is a large and important employer and a key part of the community in Leeds. They have partnered with eight local schools and four cultural organisations on an ongoing project that is about to enter its fourth year. They hope that by exposing children to culture, fashion and the arts at an early age, they will improve their life chances.
Leeds Young Film is one of their cultural partners and have engaged over 200,000 children and young people through a range of projects and programmes offering access to international film culture, the experience of filmmaking, and the chance for young people to showcase their own films. Currently, they are promoting Industry Voices , a series of 12 short films made in 2021, exploring lived experiences of working in film, television and the games industry in the UK. Eleven industry professionals discuss how their class, race, gender, disability and regional location has affected their chance to work and progress in their chosen careers.
Burberry Inspire Year 2018-19
Leeds Young Film invited over a 1000 Year 7, 8 and 9 students from the Co-op Academy Leeds and The Ruth Gorse Academy in central Leeds to a special screening of Whale Rider at Leeds Town Hall. This event launched a year of creative film activities that saw students acting, singing, dancing, making and crafting whilst directing their first ever short film. The film programme was a mixture of one day and six day practical activities ranging from scriptwriting, storyboarding, camera, sound and lighting techniques to editing.
