Gamers and Creators: What Young People Really Think of Roblox and The Digital World

Roblox is one of the most successful tools for experimentation and creativity. It now has 47.3 million daily active users and just under half are under the age of 13. Now young people have been given the chance to share their views.

This summer Roblox, in conjunction with Internet Matters, surveyed a small group of gamers and creators and produced a report that they describe as 'a deep dive' into the online lives of a group of teens, hearing in their own words how the internet has allowed them to become ‘a completely new person’ and to create ‘strong friendships’ which ‘bring out the best’ in them.'

Roblox, one of the most popular gaming platforms for teenagers, was co-founded by Dave Baszucki, who had previously created a 2D simulated physics laboratory called Interactive Physics that let students replicate experiences such as dropping a car off a multistorey building.

Having seen how young people interacted with the tool, Baszucki and his fellow co-founders went on to create Roblox. This is an immersive, physics-simulating multiplayer platform which lets anyone design, create and build their own 3D experiences.

Roblox is often young children's first social platform where they come together to make new friends and play. The company works with parents, educators and police forces. The company is as concerned with the safety of children as it is with helping young people to develop digital mastery and learn the skills to make immersive digital worlds.

Their website corp.roblox.com says: 'We believe in building a safe, civil, and diverse community—one that inspires and fosters creativity and positive relationships between people around the world.'
