Consultation on Home Education Guidelines

The DfES has proposed new guidelines on "elective home education" detailing that attending school is not compulsory but full time education is. A record number of parents are now thought to be educating their children at home - research commissioned by the DfES states that numbers could range between 7,400 and 34,400. These DfES guidelines represent the government's view on the best approach to balancing the rights of parents and the obligations of local authorities for educating children. The guidelines offer advice to parents, and advice to support local authorities in carrying out their statutory responsibilities. Consultation on the proposed guidelines runs until the end of July.
