The Gunpowder Plot.. remember, remember the fifth of November
During the Reformation in the 16th century, Protestants across Europe demanded reform of the doctrine and government of the Roman Catholic Church. They questioned its traditional teachings and rejected the Pope’s authority.
The last thirty years of 16th century Europe was consumed by bitter and bloody religious wars.
Disappointed by the failure of James I’s peace treaty negotiations with Spain to improve their position, a small group of young Catholic gentlemen from the Midlands decided to take action.
In May 1604 they hatched a plan to blow up the King, together with the House of Lords and the House of Commons during the ceremonial opening of Parliament.
Parliament’s opening was set for 5 November 1605. By then 36 barrels of gunpowder were in place in the storeroom, under the watchful eye of Guy Fawkes…
This is a story full of intrigue, Machievellian goings-on, desperation and failure, and every year schools throughout the UK study this fascinating and notorious event of 1605.
