Allan Ahlberg’s two books of Mrs Butler poems are the best loved and most widely used poetry books in primary schools. Virtually every school has copies and the familiarity of the subject matter, the craft and the humour of the poems appeal to teachers and children of all ages. This book aims to provide resources and suggest activities for teachers (whether full-time, part-time or supply), who would like to integrate these well-known poems more closely into their literacy teaching.
Covering elements of poetry such as theme, language, mood and form, the book enables teachers to integrate the poems easily into the literacy lesson. Children will begin analysing poetry while thinking about the messages conveyed.
The book is divided into three sections. The first two sections provide the text of Allan Ahlberg’s poems, suggestions for the activities arising from them and photocopiable activity sheets. The third section offers ideas for teaching other Ahlberg poems and linking poetry to other curriculum areas.
There is no reason why much of the material couldn’t be used with younger or older children, if you wish. However, the poems selected seem to fit well into the age range requirements for lower KS2. Ideal for homework too!
