Designed to promote the skills based curriculum, Arctic Stories has a particular focus on thinking and communication skills, promoting visual, audio and kinaesthetic learning.
Listen to the Ihalmiut’s stories on CD, dramatise role-play scripts, use photocopiable worksheets to accompany the activities and view a Powerpoint presentation of Arctic images. Pupils will have the opportunity to develop their ICT skills in finding and analysing information, creating a ‘Wiki’ and presenting their own news item for Newsround.
Also included in the pack are five copies of the storybook ‘The Gifts of Kaila’ – a creation story written and illustrated by the Ihalmiut people, designed to deepen children’s understanding of the Ihalmiut and their beliefs, and also provide opportunities for guided reading.
Most of the activities require children to work collaboratively in pairs or groups, where they are encouraged to take responsibility for their own learning and that of others.
