Black Hair Matters!

Some schools have punitive hair policies. Thursday September 15th marks the fifth World Afro Day and provides an opportunity to educate schools, staff and pupils
Afro hair is different but should not be subject to sanctions

How would you feel if people invaded your personal space, touched your hair, commented on its texture and maybe tugged it too?

This is the experience of thousands of children every day. These are examples of what are known as ‘microaggressions': disturbing and unsettling incidents that aren’t severe enough to lead to disciplinary charges.  There are incidents where children have cut off part of a Black child’s braid or dreadlock. That is a crime and can lead to a charge of assault, battery or actual bodily harm but in practice it is rarely followed up.
