Assistive Technology

Behind The Brand

Claro Software is one of the oldest names in assistive technology for dyslexia. Now part of the TextHelp group, the team continues to provide first class support to the DSA market.

Industry news

From early days, Claro were experts in speech synthesis, word prediction, spell checking and switch access. They combined them to make innovative, easy-to-use products on Microsoft Windows, Apple Mac, Google Chromebook, iPad and iPhone, Android, and on the Web.

Their mission over the years has been to create innovative, easy-to-use software so people with disabilities could overcome problems with reading, writing and planning. They wanted to ensure that all their clients could achieve their potential in education, their personal life and the workplace.

Claro have a long history with assistive technology organisations. They have been patrons of the Dyslexia Institute UK, an organisational member of the British Dyslexia Association, the International Dyslexia Association, the British Assistive Technology Association, the Assistive Technology Industry Association and the British Educational Suppliers Association.

An insider's view

Philip Burgin is a member of the Claro team and is dyslexic.

His story shows how nerve-wracking it can be to apply for a job when you have dyslexia.

I remember walking across a car park and talking to a friend who said: ‘Do you know there’s a job going at TextHelp?’ This was at 4:30pm on a Friday, and the closing date was at 5pm. My heart sank. How could I get a CV together on my phone in a car park in 30 minutes? I cobbled together what I could and sent it, not holding out much hope as the spelling was bad (not my finest work). Feeling deflated, I forgot about it over the weekend.
