European Survey on Language Competences: Language Proficiency in England

This DfE research summarises the findings from a study that looks to compare the foreign language skills of secondary school pupils in fourteen European countries. The survey’s objectives were to provide information on the foreign language knowledge of pupils in European countries; and to provide context information to policymakers and teachers, covering culture, policies and practices. Family Stressors And Children’s Outcomes

This DfE research by the Childhood Wellbeing Research Centre aimed to identify the family stress factors and parental behaviours that were associated with worse children’s outcomes at age 7 and those family factors and parental behaviour that helped children to succeed. Beyond 2012 – Outstanding Physical Education For All

This Ofsted report makes recommendations for schools and the Department for Education to secure the quality of PE in schools and draws out improvements made to PE and sport over the last four years. The report found that PE is generally in good health. Considerable investment over the last decade has ensured PE is a central part of school life for pupils of all ages. However, in some schools Ofsted found there was not enough physical activity in PE lessons. In more than a quarter of schools, teaching did not improve pupils’ physical fitness. Generation Y: The (Modern) World Of Personal Finance

This new study by the Centre for the Study of Financial Innovation (CSFI) looks at the personal finance habits of young people between the ages of 16 - 25. The two key issues discussed in the report are: who is responsible for teaching young people about personal finance and what will the financial landscape of the future look like? Poverty And Low Educational Achievement In Wales

On average about 17 per cent of Welsh children live in relative poverty, using the percentage of children receiving free school meals (FSM) as an indicator. This new study by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation suggests that future Welsh education policy should emphasise parental involvement, extra-curricular activities and mentoring. Reform of the National Curriculum in England

On 7 February 2013 the Secretary of State for Education announced a public consultation on the draft National Curriculum which will run until 16 April 2013. The consultation also asks for views on proposals to dis-apply aspects of the current National Curriculum from September 2013, so as to give schools greater flexibility as they prepare to teach the new one, and on plans to replace the existing ICT curriculum with a new computing curriculum. Key Stage 4 Policy Reform And Its Potential Impact On At-Risk Young People

This NFER paper, published in parallel with the Department for Education's consultation on reform of key stage 4 qualifications, argues that robust evidence from research could help prevent hundreds of thousands of young people from disengaging. Current policy dialogue is incredibly positive in terms of giving all young people, whatever their background, the chance to succeed, but unless policymakers listen to the research evidence, the opposite may happen.
