The Finch Report

This report tackles the important question of how to achieve better, faster access to research publications for anyone who wants to read or use them. The Finch report recommends a balanced programme of action to enable more people to read and use the publications arising from research, and to accelerate the progress towards a fully open access environment. The report recommended extensions to current licensing arrangements in the higher education and other sectors; improvements to the infrastructure of repositories, and support for the moves by publishers to provide access to the great majority of journals in public libraries. The Outdoor Environment

This research, by The Learning Escape, looks into the environmental effects that changing learning practices will have on our children and world. The report promotes the concept of Environmental Citizenship in Primary Schools and Early Years settings. It specifically address the long-term benefits for the environment of learning within natural, outdoor space and argues that, without a focused effort on developing a culture of Environmental Citizenship, we face increasing environmental problems and a decrease in the number of people able and willing to work towards a solution. Controlled Assessment in Modern Foreign Languages

This Ofqual report into Controlled Assessment in Modern Foreign Languages follows on from earlier research which looked at teachers’ views of controlled assessment in a range of GCSE subjects. The report focuses on the issues identified in the first report relevant specifically to MFL subjects. The School Report 2012

The School Report 2012 by Stonewall is a survey of more than 1,600 gay young people. The report has found that homophobic bullying is still common in many schools and often goes unchallenged by teachers. The research provides clear evidence that in those schools that are taking simple steps to tackle homophobia, pupils are both much less likely to have been bullied and much more likely to feel happy and welcome in their schools. Educating the Highly Able

According to The Sutton Report, by the Centre for Education and Employment Research at the University of Buckingham, England’s teenagers are just over half as likely to reach the highest levels in maths in international tests as students from other developed nations. It advocates that highly able children should be identified in tests at the end of primary school, and their progress and performance tracked in published secondary school tables. Dealing with parental complaints

Parental complaints are becoming more common both in the state sector and in the private sector. As parents become more and more aware of the meritocratic society that we live in, and the importance of a sound education for their children, they are increasingly inclined to take action against issues that may arise at schools. This article sets out the different ways to challenge schools in the two different sectors mentioned above, and the potential remedies that might be available.
