Tackling Child Obesity

This 62–page is report, prepared jointly by the National Audit Office, the Healthcare Commission and the Audit Commission, considers the effectiveness of government work to tackle child obesity and how it might be improved. The report shows that while a multifaceted approach to child obesity is the most effective, there is little evidence to show whether the range of programmes and initiatives in place to improve children’s health and nutrition is sufficient to achieve the government's target. Drug use, smoking and drinking among young people in England

This is a 25–page survey on secondary school children aged 11 to 15, carried out for the Health and Social Care Information Centre and the Home Office by the National Centre for Social Research and the National Foundation for Educational Research. It shows that around 11% of 11–15 years olds had taken drugs in the timeframe of 4 weeks, 9% had smoked at least one cigarette in a week and 22% had drunk alcohol in a week.

It examines young people's school experiences within the context of wider family, peer and neighbourhood relationships, and the relations between young people from a variety of backgrounds.
